Client History

The client is an insurance company handling a large portfolio of insured vehicles. These protected vehicles include automobiles and trailers. Over time, they had collected extensive statistics on road accidents, but the data was mostly aggregated and not tied to individual drivers.

As competition increased, the client wanted to introduce flexible premium models based on driving behavior. To do that, they needed a reliable way to track, analyze, and score drivers at an individual level.

Challenges

The client faced several key challenges:

  • They had no direct way to monitor driver behavior in real time.
  • Accident data was available, but it could not be linked to individual driving patterns.
  • A large number of insured vehicles showed above average accident rates, which reduced profit margins to nearly 2 percent per year.
  • Without driver level insights, it was impossible to offer risk based premium plans.
  • The solution was required to handle large quantities of data securely and reliably.

Goals & Objective

The project goals were clear:

  • Track driver behavior at an individual level.
  • Identify low risk and high risk drivers using real driving data.
  • Enable dynamic insurance premiums based on driving behavior.
  • Reduce accident related losses and improve profit margins.
  • Build a scalable, real time monitoring system.
Solutions

After evaluating the requirements, the client selected Acme One as their technology partner. The solution was designed in two main parts.

  • First, a data logging device was selected that could be plugged into a vehicle’s OBD II port. This device collected driving data and transmitted it using Bluetooth and GSM networks.
  • Second, a cloud based platform was built to process and analyze the incoming data. Microsoft Azure was used to manage data processing, storage, and delivery of insights to the client.
  • Raw driving data was stored in AWS S3. Windows Services were used to draw and process this data. This process enabled us to convert it into a structured and usable format using the Microsoft .NET framework. The processed data was then stored in a SQL database and presented through a user interface.
  • The system calculated performance metrics based on factors such as distance traveled, number of trips, fuel usage, and overall driving behavior.

Implementation

The solution was implemented in phases.

  • A vehicle data logging device was integrated with the OBD II port.
  • Driving data was transmitted through smartphone Bluetooth and GSM networks.
  • AWS S3 was used for raw data storage.
  • Windows Services parsed and transformed raw data into modeled datasets.
  • Processed data was stored in SQL databases.
  • Microsoft Azure handled deployment, scalability, and service management.
  • A dashboard was built to display driver scores and behavior metrics.
