Executive Summary

Making realistic pilot training more accessible and affordable was the goal behind Project Nimbus. Built by Acme One for an aviation training organization, the Unity based VR flight simulator enables pilots to practice cockpit operations, flight controls, and emergency scenarios in an immersive virtual environment. The platform helped new users master takeoff and landing up to 30% faster while delivering a scalable, cost effective alternative to traditional flight simulators.

Key Results

  • Up to 30% faster mastery of takeoff and landing procedures.
  • Higher engagement than traditional non VR flight simulators.
  • Strong positive feedback on realism and immersion.
  • Optimized for smooth performance across multiple VR platforms.
  • Increased interest from aviation training institutions.
  • Cost effective alternative to traditional flight simulators.

What challenges do aviation organizations face with traditional pilot training?

Traditional flight simulators provide valuable training but are often expensive to purchase, maintain, and operate. Their high cost and limited availability make it difficult for many training organizations to scale learning opportunities for new pilots.

Additional challenges included:

  • High investment and maintenance costs for physical simulators.
  • Complex cockpit interfaces that overwhelm beginners.
  • Balancing realistic flight behavior with an engaging learning experience.
  • Maintaining smooth VR performance across different hardware.
  • Providing accessible training without compromising aviation accuracy.

Goals & Objective

The project aimed to:

Make pilot training more accessible through VR.

  • Reduce dependence on expensive physical simulators.
  • Create intuitive cockpit interactions for new pilots.
  • Deliver realistic flight scenarios with immersive learning.
  • Support multiple VR devices with optimized performance.
How did Acme One build an immersive VR flight simulator?

Acme One developed Project Nimbus using Unity, combining realistic aircraft controls with immersive VR interactions that closely replicate real cockpit operations.

The simulator allows users to interact naturally with the throttle, yoke, switches, and cockpit instruments using VR controllers and hand tracked interactions.

Dynamic weather systems, turbulence, and day and night environments create realistic flight conditions that challenge users in different scenarios.

To support beginners, the platform includes AI assisted guided training that introduces cockpit controls step by step, making aviation concepts easier to understand while reducing the learning curve.

The development team also optimized rendering pipelines and scalable environments to ensure smooth performance across a wide range of VR hardware instead of targeting only high end systems.

How was the project implemented?

The implementation included:

  • Building interactive VR cockpit controls.
  • Developing realistic flight environments and weather systems.
  • Creating AI assisted pilot training tutorials.
  • Optimizing graphics and rendering for multiple VR devices.
  • Conducting user testing to validate learning effectiveness and engagement.

What Our Client Says

Don’t just take our word for it. Hear what our satisfied clients have to say about their experience partnering with ACME ONE

"What stood out to us was how quickly new users picked up the controls. Project Nimbus makes flying feel real without the price tag of a full simulator, and our trainees were landing planes confidently within their first few sessions."
