Client History

The client operates in the field services industry and manages hundreds of subcontractors working across different locations. Field teams relied on a tablet based application built on Google Apps to receive assignments and update job status.

While the existing setup worked, data was stored in Google Sheets and reporting capabilities were restricted. As operations expanded, the organization needed a more structured and scalable system without disrupting the tools already used by field workers.

Challenges

The client faced several operational limitations.

  • Data stored in Google Sheets lacked structure and scalability
  • Reporting capabilities were limited for back office teams
  • No centralized enterprise grade database
  • Coordination between field workers and office staff required better visibility
  • Authentication had to support subcontractors using Gmail while office staff worked within Office 365
  • The system needed modernization without replacing the tablet optimized field application.

Goals & Objective

The organization aimed to:

  • Retain the existing Google Apps based front end
  • Migrate data to a secure and scalable cloud database
  • Improve reporting and administration capabilities
  • Enable seamless communication between field and office teams
  • Provide secure access for subcontractors and staff
  • Reduce the risk of missed job assignments

The objective was to create an integrated architecture that combined Google and Microsoft platforms efficiently.

Solutions

Acme One designed a three tier architecture that connected Google Apps with Microsoft Azure and Office 365.

User Front End on Google App Script

The field service application remained on the Google Apps platform using Google App Script. This ensured continuity for field workers. The platform allowed rapid development using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3.

Backend on SQL Azure

  • Data previously stored in Google Sheets was transferred to an SQL Server instance hosted on Microsoft Azure. This provided improved structure, performance, and scalability.
  • Communication between Google App Script and SQL Azure was handled through the native JDBC API.

Reporting Through Office 365

  • For administration and reporting, the system was integrated with Office 365. SharePoint Business Connectivity Services exposed the field service data to back office teams.
  • Field workers authenticated using their Gmail accounts, while office staff used Microsoft Outlook within the Office 365 environment. This allowed both ecosystems to function together smoothly.

Implementation

The solution was implemented using:

  • Google Apps and Google App Script for the front end
  • Microsoft Azure and SQL Azure for backend database hosting
  • JDBC API for application database connectivity
  • Office 365 and SharePoint Online for reporting
  • SharePoint Business Connectivity Services for administrative interfaces
  • Testing ensured secure authentication, stable data flow, and consistent performance across platforms.
