What challenges do idle RPG games face?

Many idle RPGs either become too simplistic to maintain long term engagement or too complex for new players to understand. Designing meaningful progression while keeping gameplay approachable requires balancing mechanics, performance, and player experience.

Key challenges included:

  • Making deep progression systems easy to understand.
  • Preventing player overwhelm during onboarding.
  • Managing complex hero, buff, and skill interactions.
  • Visualizing combat calculations in meaningful ways.
  • Giving designers efficient balancing tools.

Goals & Objectives

The project aimed to:

  • Create rewarding idle progression.
  • Improve new player onboarding.
  • Simplify complex gameplay mechanics.
  • Accelerate balancing and game tuning.
  • Build a scalable RPG framework for future updates.
How did Acme One build an engaging idle RPG?

Acme One developed Legacy of Legends in Unity using layered progression systems that introduce mechanics gradually while allowing players to continue progressing even when offline.

A structured onboarding experience introduces heroes, abilities, buffs, and progression systems in stages, helping players understand core mechanics through gameplay rather than lengthy tutorials.

The Library system serves as an in game knowledge base where players can revisit lore, gameplay mechanics, and character information whenever needed.

The Profile system tracks player progression, achievements, and performance statistics while encouraging continued engagement.

Custom debugging and visualization tools were developed within Unity, allowing designers to instantly evaluate damage curves, buff calculations, and combat balance without lengthy testing cycles.

The user interface was redesigned using clean layouts, visual effects, and animated feedback to clearly communicate important gameplay events while minimizing information overload.
